Introduction by Pastor Doug
My brother David lives in Houston and has been on the front lines of rescues there. One day his crew used dump trucks as transports for flood victims. Houston residents caught in rising waters were forced to crawl four feet into the back of a dump truck. It hadn’t been cleaned-out for this purpose, so evacuees were forced to sit in a muddy truck. I express to him my horror and sadness about it all and he lightens the mood telling me the story of one man who stood knee-deep in the water in his Bermuda shorts, refusing to get into the truck. He didn’t want to soil his pants. My brother suggested to him, in blunt, Texan-speak, that when the water rises above his knees he will most assuredly soil his shorts! He climbed aboard.
Jesus asks “Why do you worry about clothes?” Perhaps this is a question for the man afraid of soiling his shorts, so concerned about material goods that he almost missed his shot at rescue. It is a particularly challenging question for people like us who have trouble accepting that God is in the habit of sending rescue and all we’ve got are these Bermuda shorts. Can we trust this ancient wisdom from the Gospel of Matthew, that we need not worry?
