LESSON: Isaiah 1:11-17
MESSAGE: “Extending our Stewardship”
This week we conclude our stewardship season with a look at how our giving branches out from our own work and supports meaningful mission and justice work through our two denominations – The United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ. UPA has historically given a large percentage of its budget to supporting the work of these two denominations. This means that we’ve helped to provide boots on the ground after disasters, funded lobbyists doing advocacy work in our nation’s capital, and provided support for Native American tribes throughout the country. We’ll contrast our giving and stewardship with an ancient text from the beginning of the book of Isaiah, where the prophet lays out that the people have ignored the practice of justice, instead making offerings and sacrifices that aren’t meaningful – and are even tiring to God! We’ll wrestle with how we make our own offerings something that matters in the world.
We’ll also hear from the participants of the Mexico trip from this past summer. I’m looking forward to what they have to share with us about their experience.
Following worship, I’m excited for our first forum of the program year, where we’ll hear from three candidates for our 3-year grant. We’re thankful for the partnership that we have had with Boston Gleaners and we’re hoping that we are able to make a difference in the same way with another organization over the next three years.
Blessings and peace,
