Lesson: Isaiah 2:1-8
Message: “A New Vision”
This week we return to in-person worship in the sanctuary! I am excited for what this means for UPA and I expect, like many of you, am also feeling apprehensive about returning to group gatherings. This means we are also in the process of (yet again) essentially re-inventing how we do worship together. This is going to need to be a group effort of supporting one another and being kind to one another, as much as it’s going to be a joyful time to reconnect! Please see the note from John, our Moderator regarding some of the steps that we will be taking early on to ensure safety and some time to evaluate this transition.
It’s very likely that we’ll be changing things up through the summer as we know more as a community and as we feel out how we will worship together in this “new normal”. We welcome your feedback – and most importantly want to know how UPA can nurture your spirit during this time. You can reach out to myself or to Linda, our Worship Board chair with your comments.
This Sunday, we’ll be looking at the text from Isaiah, where the prophet is called to a life of serving God. It’s a vision of the bigness and the holiness of God’s presence. It’s also a major transition, coming at the time of the death of a popular king, and preparing for some really difficult challenges ahead. It’s significantly different from our current context, but the immensity of the change is one that should speak to us. What are we called to in this new time and place? In this new transition? How might God prepare us for what is next?
I am praying for all of us in this time of both joy and upheaval. I look forward to seeing many of you on Sunday, either in person or online. And, if you’re traveling on this holiday weekend (a novel concept!) then may you be blessed with safety and joyful connection.
Blessings and peace,
Prelude: “Nocturne op, 9, No. 2” Frédéric Chopin
Meditation: “Sonata op. 27, No.2″ (Moonlight Sonata) Ludwig van Beethoven
Postlude: “Sonata No. 16, K.545″ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Solo: “Let All the World in Every Corner Sing” Routley Camille Hathaway – mezzo
A Message on Returning to Worship – From Our Moderator
As vaccination levels go up and Covid-19 infections drop around the state and nation, guidance is changing quickly with respect to the rules for masking, social distancing and indoor capacity standards. Everyone is finding it somewhat difficult to keep up. OK, Tony Fauci isn’t, but the rest of us are. We recognize that there are a lot of anxieties around changes in covid-related safety procedures. We also recognize that we are going to restart services at a time when guidance changes are either actively changing or have recently changed.
So how will we address this? We will address it by starting back using a “risk lowering” approach in order to see how everyone feels. For the first few weeks of in-person services, we are going to ask that everyone wear a mask when entering the church and when inside the sanctuary. The pews have been marked to show social distancing recommendations, and we ask that you respect others and observe the markings unless all parties agree to sit together. We will also hold off on returning to coffee hour as well as singing hymns together inside. For now, we’ll close our services by processing outside and singing a hymn and a vocal benediction together.
Let’s try it this way first and see how it feels. We will talk about it as we go, and ask that people give feedback about what you feel comfortable about and what we might improve. The long-term outlook is that if trends continue as they are now, we will eventually return to life as we remember it, with church services that look like they used to. While we will not be able to meet everyone’s needs and comfort level at the same time, the UPA has always succeeded in the face of adversity and we will work to do so now as well.
We look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks, whether we see you in-person or online.
John Connor, Moderator
Live Stream Information
Please bear with us as we work through some technical issues and get the flow of worship down in our new reality. This will be an unfolding process as we try to include remote participants as fully as possible and as we work with things like our sound system which were not designed for live streaming.
We will continue streaming our worship on both Zoom and Facebook Live. Please share these links with your friends. Bear in mind that we cannot share the Zoom links publicly (to keep from being Zoom bombed), so please share it person to person rather than posting it on Facebook/Twitter, or other public social media. It’s fine to share the Facebook link broadly and publicly. For Zoom login information please contact Chris at Chris@newtonchurch.org.
