Lesson: Acts 1:1-14
Message: “Bouncy Ball”
This week we will be joined by Rev. We Chang, our District Superintendent from Metro Boston Hope District of the United Methodist Church, who will be giving our meditation via video. We had scheduled for him to preach at UPA a few weeks back, but with the start of the pandemic, we had to put this off. He will be giving a message about the disciples and early Christian community, as they figure out what they are to do in the wake of Jesus’ ascending into heaven and leaving them to continue to do the work of the church. This change must have come as quite a shock. I trust that Rev. Chang’s message to us will speak some Spirit into the many changes and challenges that we are facing at this moment. I’m glad for his voice and the support of the United Methodist Church during this time.
This morning I met via Zoom with clergy members from around Newton as we were joined by representatives from the Newton Health Department. The sentiment amongst Newton Interfaith Clergy is that faith communities should continue most of their worship in an online capacity. Not one clergy member reported that they were planning on opening for congregational worship in the near future. We are certainly in unprecedented times and uncharted territory. I am thankful for this group, as well as my other colleagues, who are helping to think through ways of embracing the most important and essential missions of the church. I am also grateful to our Worship Board and Parish Council for taking leadership over planning for the future and discerning what’s best as we move into new phases of this time. I have faith that UPA will find new and creative ways of being community together, and living into its mission of serving other people in the world around us.

Online Worship Tech Issues
We will start our live streams about 10 minutes prior to the worship start time. During this moment you will hear silence, but see rotating pictures of art that our children and youth have made to share with us. Facebook is clearly having some issues keeping up with the demands of every congregation moving to worship online. Thanks for being patient during this time of sudden transition! Here are some tips if you’re having trouble:
First, try reducing the quality level in Facebook – On the video window highlight over the “resolution” along the bottom right corner of the video player to select a different bandwidth option. This may take a moment to update within your browser.
Next, you can also try using your phone instead. Some people have had more luck using the app than connecting on their computers.
If that doesn’t work, here are some other options:
1. Try a different internet browser (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, etc.) and also close unnecessary tabs on your browser.
2. Try updating your internet browser
3. Try restarting your computer
4. Try restarting your modem or router
5. Try updating your flash player
