Lesson: Acts 2:1-21
Message: “Spirit of Transformation”
This week is Pentecost, marking 50 days after the Passover. For the disciples of Jesus, this time was a transition from mourning Jesus’ death, and living in the uncertainty of the future, to receiving the Holy Spirit and the purpose of forming new community and continuing their work together. It was a time of recognizing that they were not the only recipients of this Spirit and that it was inclusive – for everyone – and they should bring the good news to people far and wide. It was the end of one period and the transition to something new. We often think of this moment as the birth of the church.
We’ll celebrate Pentecost this weekend, starting with an in-person, outdoor gathering on Saturday at 3pm (note that if we need to cancel on account of rain, we’ll move it to the next day, Sunday, also at 3pm). We’ll celebrate the birth of the church, but also the Spirit that is present in the transition of our seniors to graduation. We’ll hear senior sermons from Evan Hoch and Aidan McGovern. Please register for this in-person gathering so that we know how many to expect and also have an easy way to contact you in case of changes due to weather. On Sunday, we’ll celebrate Pentecost in our livestream worship. We’ll take a look at the passage in Acts where the disciples receive the Spirit and people from all over that part of the world hear the message in their native language. It’s a moment that highlights the inclusivity and unity of the early church, and this is the culmination of our Easter Season series on how the early church responded to the resurrection.
Finally, the following week, May 30th, we’ll plan on being in person in the sanctuary for worship. We will live stream from the sanctuary on Zoom and Facebook live, but you can also come to the church and be in attendance with us on that day. The Boards and church leadership have been working hard to make this happen! Please be patient as we work out yet another way of doing worship together, and figuring out how to live into the changing guidelines and precautions that continue to be necessary. I’m sure that there are going to be some bumps along the way. I trust, however, that this will begin moving us onto the path of some sort of “new normal” or post pandemic time, during which new joys and ministries will emerge and UPA.
We continue our worship on both Zoom and Facebook Live. For Zoom login information please reach out to Chris at Chris@newtonchurch.org.

Senior Sermons/Pentecost Outdoor In-Person Gathering
Come join us on Saturday at 3pm as we celebrate the birth of the church at Pentecost and also hear from Evan Hoch and Aidan McGovern as they give their senior sermons! You’re encouraged to wear red, or a red item of clothing. Wearing red is a traditional way to celebrate Pentecost, representing the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Please register so that we have an understanding of how many people to expect. This will also give us a way to contact people in case of a change due to weather. If we need to postpone we will move to the following day, Sunday May 23rd at 3pm.
You can register at the link here: https://signup.com/go/cjbNrVe
We will continue to wear masks during this time. The restrictions in Massachusetts will not be lifted until later this month and in addition, there are likely people who would like to attend that have not been vaccinated at this point (including children) who will not feel safe if others are maskless.
For those who are not able to attend, we are working on a way of recording or streaming the service and will send connection information out in a separate email.
