Lesson: John 17:6-20
Message: “Receiving the Disciples’ Blessing”
This week we are visiting a moment in the Gospel of John where Jesus prays for the disciples and their connection to God once Jesus leaves them. It’s a special moment for us in our tradition because this text is where the motto from the UCC comes from “That They Might All Be One”. This prayer calls for unity amongst Jesus’ followers and we know from Christian history, as well as the formation of the early church, that unity is often quite a difficult place to come to. It gives us something to strive for at the foundation of this community we call “church”.
In this prayer Jesus not only asks for unity on the part of the disciples, but he blesses them in a way that passes on the torch of the ministry that they have been doing together. The prayer highlights the connection between the disciples and “the world”. They are to be in the world but not “of the world”. There’s much for us to consider in this prayer – both individually and as a community. These words are present in the Gospel not as a record of what happened with the disciples, but as a blessing that we are also called to receive in our lives of faith. We’ll look at how this blessing might shape us, our lives, and the way that we see the world around us.
