Lesson: John 2:13-22
Message: “A Spiritual Center”
Hello Friends,
It’s hard to believe that we’ve come to March, as it doesn’t look like spring outside yet, but I’m excited about the prospect of nicer weather. Since it’s the first Sunday of the month, we’ll have communion this week, and I’d invite you to bring some bread and juice, or wine (or similar items) to our feast together during our live streamed worship.
Communion fits well with our theme for this week. We’re presented with a text from John where Jesus drives the merchants and money changers out of the temple. When people demand a sign for the justification of this act, he says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” While this seems nonsensical in the context of the Temple building, later the disciples would realize that the temple Jesus was referring to was himself.
For us this brings up the question of where our spiritual center is. While it’s often argued that Jesus is replacing the temple, this doesn’t make sense in the context of this passage. Otherwise, why would Jesus bother driving out the merchants? Instead, we see Jesus affirming that there are multiple spiritual centers, both inside the self, and in the Temple building – those need to be cleansed and given the importance they deserve. Where we find our spiritual center is important. We’ll reflect on our own spiritual centers during our worship.
On Sunday, we’ll continue worshiping on Zoom and Facebook Live. (For Zoom login information please reach out to Chris at Chris@newtonchurch.org)

It would be great to share these links with your friends. Bear in mind that we cannot share the Zoom links publicly (to keep from being Zoom bombed), so please share it person to person rather than posting it on Facebook/Twitter, or other public social media. It’s fine to share the Facebook link broadly and publicly. Also, please share our Lenten devotional podcast with others to get the word out about what we are doing. A new message will be coming at the end of the week.
Blessings and peace,
Chris
