LESSON: Isaiah 35
The desert and the dry land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom like the crocus. They will burst into bloom, and rejoice with joy and singing.
MESSAGE: “Look What is Emerging at UPA!”
Continuing a Lenten season appreciation of images captured by Winslow Homer, this week we reflect on the game of “Snap the Whip,” which he painted in 1872. It’s a simple game; a leader runs in random directions and players behind the leader hold onto one another’s hands, trying not to get “whipped” off as forces increase down the line. There is no goal to the game but to hold on.
Hold on! Take the hand of another and hold on! Wait for the return of Spring, the return of bright days! Hold on! Homer’s image, crafted in the post-Civil War days where wounds were fresh, offered a healing balm. So did the image spoken by the prophet Isaiah. The bitter days of exile will not last. Hold on. Even deserts bloom from time to time. The bloom is coming! Look what is emerging!

This week’s topic is Incarnation:Divinely Human. “The meaning of the incarnation has been debated since the beginning of Christianity. Although often associated with Jesus alone, the notion of incarnation can be understood most fully when it also includes Jesus’ followers, called, like Jesus, to enflesh the Spirit in divinely human ways.” Come and discuss what this ancient theological concept means for us today. All are welcome!
