Lesson: Luke 2:22-40
Message: “Epiphany and Dedication”
I hope that you are having a wonderful Christmas season. We’re still in the midst of the 12 days of Christmas (just like the song – and yes, I just checked and there are multiple parodies of this song about Christmas and COVID on Youtube). This time of Christmas ends with the Epiphany, which typically celebrates the visit of the Wise-Ones or Magi as they follow the star to find Jesus. We celebrate this as a recognition of Jesus’ importance from other nations near and far. It asserts the universal nature of Jesus’ purpose and mission.
This week, we’re going to look at another text that’s associated with the Epiphany, the moment that Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the Temple to be dedicated there. Jesus’ importance gets noticed there as well by wise ones that are faithful individuals in the life of the Temple. We’ll look at this story of Jesus as a baby and what it might say about our own spiritual practices and hope for the future.
