Message: “The Part Where God Begins” by Doug Robinson-Johnson
This Sunday hear the story of Kate Bowler, 33-year-old professor at Duke Divinity School and author of the a recent article “Top 5 Worst Religious clichés for People in Pain.” For example, resist the urge to say “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Kate has heard all fiveclichés , because she suffered a dibilitating disease rendering both arms useless for a year, then she suffered a miscarriage. Most recently she was diagnosed with stage four cancer. It is good to listen when such people share their truth, both because we too suffer pain, and because such people can help us cut through the pleasantries to find deeper certainties.
Bible Focus: Mark 1:16-38
Mark begins his biography of Jesus with three healing stories. Then Mark shares a curious moment when his disciples inform Jesus that crowds have come out from their villages seeking healing. Jesus responds, “Let’s go the opposite direction.” What?
