Help UPA staff members shape worship design for September and October! Plan now to join us for a few minutes after worship this Sunday, August 27th, to discuss favorite traditions, music and any ideas you believe might enrich our experience of worship!
Special Guest Joining Pastor Doug in Worship!
Martha Bancroft created the worship banners currently on display in the Betty Meyer Gallery. Bancroft will join us to share some of the story of how these were created.
Lesson from the Bible: Song of Solomon 6:1-12
The Message “Where Has My Beloved Gone?” “Cantico de Cantici” a painting by Alba Lavermicocca
Introduction by Pastor Doug
The Song of Solomon still blushes the cheeks of Sunday School teachers everywhere. Young lovers express their deep desire for one another through thinly veiled, sexually charged euphemisms. “Let us go out early into the vineyards and see if the vines have budded, whether grape blossoms have opened.” “A garden locked is my sister, my bride, a garden locked and a fountain sealed.” A question is raised midway through the sensual feast, however, introducing the possibility that someone or something has been lost. There is a sense that this mystical garden of youth is perhaps locked to many of us now. Our Sunday guest, artist Martha Bancroft, reveals that the creation of worship banners for the United Parish of Auburndale helped her cope with her first husband’s suicide. Many have discovered spiritual, creative, life-giving practices which help them transform loss. This Sunday we will consider a few possibilities for “going-out into the garden,” even when it seems blossoms are no longer in bloom.
Sanctuary Renovations Updates
Pew cushions are now in place! We are eager to reveal the renewed sanctuary on Sunday, September 10th!
Gratitude for Local Architect Peter Sachs
Last Spring Mr. Peter Sachs offered pro bono sketches and seating plans for the United Parish of Auburndale. Sunday, September 10th, we will honor and celebrate Peter Sachs and other volunteers who have given heart and soul to the renovation of sacred space here over the past few years.
