Lesson: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 and Matthew 28:16-20
Message: Senior Sermons from Austen and Amanda
On Sunday we will be joined by Austen and Amanda, who will deliver their senior sermons. Please join me in congratulating them on their graduations! We seek to make this special for them and for all graduates during this time of upheaval. During these moments of transition, when we often take stock of what’s most important in life, it’s even more important for people who are moving from one phase in life to another to have a moment to reflect on what they’ve learned and received over the past years and how they might carry that to their next endeavors. I am also excited about what we might learn from their journeys.
The Lectionary seems to comply this week as it presents us with two farewell texts, the end of the Gospel of Matthew and the end of Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. Both remind us of God’s expansive nature, that God is present in the ministry and person of Jesus, that God is present as divine creator and parent, and that God moves through all of us through the Holy Spirit.
It’s also a communion Sunday this week. Bring bread, and juice or wine, to worship for the elements, which we will bless together. Communion is one of those things that seems to get richer as you celebrate it in different ways. Part of the mystery of communion is that is reminds us that we are all one in the body of Christ, and yet, also that we are connected in our individual bodies and the diversity of where we come from, with all Christians, is all places and times. Bringing our own elements to communion highlights this. So find something interesting and colorful to use for the bread and the wine! Bring some pumpernickel or some hearty wheat bread, some cinnamon rolls or honey buns, some tortillas or some pitas. The body of Christ is not one color.
