“10 Most Challenging Questions in the Bible: #8”
“What Do you See?”
An Introduction by Pastor Doug
The cover of this summer’s “Atlantic” magazine is a shocking image of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) targeting the viewer. “Can North Korea Be Stopped?” The answer from journalist Mark Bowden is, essentially, no. Bowden believes the Trump Administration has but four options for dealing with the nuclear threat posed by the Kim administration, all of which are bad.
Preemptive strike–leading to the possible nuclear annihilation of Seoul and Tokyo
Tightening the screws–a tit for tat military escalation leading to…nuclear annihilation
Decapitation–assassinating a leader, likely escalating to nuclear annihilation
Acceptance–allowing North Korea to become a nuclear powerhouse
Now I know how the prophet Amos’ audience felt after hearing his dire predictions about the fate of Israel. Each time Adonai God asks Amos what he sees, the man describes doom in a multitude of flavors: “I see locust swarms,” “I see unquenchable fire,” “I see a plumb-line held to a crooked wall that will soon fall,” “I see an angel of death waiting by the doorposts,” I see a summer basket of fruit.” Don’t get excited about the summer basket of fruit; the word “fruit” is a homonym for “doom.” “I see a basket of doom.”
What do you see in global, national and local news these days?
Basket of fruit?
Basket of doom?
