Introduction by Pastor Doug
“They grow up so fast!” We are following our college freshman to a San Diego Bowl game this weekend, but he is not our responsibility there. He is a marching band member with a job to do. He is responsible for his own choices there. He will find his own way there and his own way home without any help from us. But I remember when he was a rose-cheeked baby sleeping in a crib so peaceful and still that I held my hand close to his nose, worried he might not be breathing. They grow up fast.
The story of Jesus’ life races forward in the span of a short week. This Sunday he appears as a twelve-year-old boy for presentation in the temple, a bit like confirmation. We may not be ready to listen for what Jesus has to say, preferring instead to smother him in gooey, nostalgic love. I mean, did you SEE that darling baby last week in the Christmas Pageant? But he grows up fast. And like most ancient narratives, biographer Luke shares only one childhood story to foreshadow the trajectory of the hero’s life.
So listen carefully as the gospel story is shared Sunday, and as Natalie shares her sense of it. What does it tell us about Jesus’ mission and purpose? What will it reveal about our mission and purpose? I expect to hear the same story in the “Soul Church” of San Diego, where they claim ” We are passionate about creating environments for people to experience Jesus, find freedom, and discover their purpose.” Will our college son go to church Sunday? I don’t know; but I know I have to offer God my thanksgiving for him and for life this week.

Students invited to share CREED worksheets as we learn about the origin of many denominations like the UCC and UMC which constitute our UPA.
