Story by Doug Wood-Boyle

Collage is an ancient art form that dates back to 900 BC in the Far East, but had a resurgence in France, where it received its name, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Now Salem based artist and architect David Michael Lieb is bringing his latest solo show. “Carry On works in Collage” to the United Parish of Auburndale’s Betty Meyer Gallery, throughout  May and June.

Lieb describes the collection in this statement, “The works presented in ‘Carry On’ are a complex collection of collage works that illuminate everyday experiences of love, betrayal, homesickness and exile, through the lens by which we experience Modern life.  ‘Carrying On’ is a metaphor to navigate the prism of life, in the presence of the greatest gradations between ecstasies and griefs.”

While artists have been layering images and incorporating autonomous elements into their work since the advent of paper, collage truly emerged as a medium in its own right in the early years of the 20th century with the Cubist experiments of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The duo coined the term “collage” (from the French verb “coller,” meaning “to glue” or “to stick”) to describe works composed from pasted pieces of colored paper, newsprint, and fabric, considered at the time to be an audacious intermingling of high and low culture. It revolutionized modern art.(i.e. artSpace.com)
The show will open Wednesday, May 2 and run through Friday, June 29. Their will be an opening reception on Sunday, May 6 at 11:30 am.
