Bill Hoch to Become Senior Pastor of Local Church

Bill Hoch is a long-time member and leader of UPA and was endorsed for ministry in the United Methodist Church by UPA last fall.  That same month he began full time seminary studies at Boston University School of Theology. He also  began an internship with Carter Memorial UMC in Needham which he completed last week.  Bill was enthusiastically certified this Spring as a Candidate for Ordained Ministry, which made him eligible to serve a church as a local pastor even before his seminary education at Boston University School of Theology was complete.

This past Sunday Bill announced that he has been appointed by the New England bishop to serve as senior pastor of Woburn United Methodist Church!

We will celebrate these milestones with Bill and his family here at UPA  on Sunday, June 17th.  If you would like to be part of planning a few surprises for that day, please contact SPRC Chairperson Beverly Loudin: beverly_loudin@atriushealth.org

Bill Hoch featured in BU Today (Story by Rich Barlow), pictured here at Carter Memorial UMC in Needham.

When the pastor at Carter Memorial Church in Needham, Mass., faced a labyrinthine task—procuring a prayer labyrinth to help parishioners meditate on Good Friday—William Hoch, Esq., just happened to know where to get one.

That’s not standard expertise for an attorney. But at 50, Hoch (STH’19) is making a midlife career switch to ministry, interning at the Needham Methodist church. He volunteers at a nonprofit fighting homelessness, which owns a 20-foot-wide canvas labyrinth that Hoch dutifully borrowed and unfurled on the floor of the church basement. He spent Good Friday doubling as answer man and traffic cop, helping adult walkers seeking contemplation and smaller strollers seeking fun in the labyrinth’s concentric circles. {READ MORE}

Support the 2018 Youth Mission Team Now!

On June 24, 2018 a group of 22 members of the United Parish of Auburndale Youth Group and adult chaperones will be heading to Scott County, TN to participate in a week-long mission trip with the Appalachia Service Project. We will be assisting in home repair projects for families in need.

Our 2017 ASP trip to Boyd County, KY was an incredible experience for the 21 folks who attended. This year we will have some returning participants, as well as some new additions. We look forward to another fun, challenging, emotional and educational experience.

We are raising funds to support the purchase of equipment, supplies and travel for the trip, as well as to fund our donation to ASP at the end of the week.

Some ways in which your donations could help:

  • $25 could fund the purchase of 2 hammers
  • $50 could fund the purchase of safety goggles for the crew
  • $100 could purchase paint to paint a kitchen or bedroom
  • $250 could purchase the safety kits for the crew

In addition to the seminar held at UPA Wednesday, some may appreciate a webinar offered by the United church of Christ on Tuesday, May 22nd at 3pm

Creating, Welcoming, Progressive, Service-Directed Worship

How well does our worship reflect our core values of:

  1. Being Radically Welcoming
  2. Being Rooted in progressive Christian theology
  3. Being of Service to others

Plan to come and share your experience!

The third and final “Completing the Circle” gathering has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 5th from 7:30-9:00 at the church. We would like to thank everyone who has attended the first two meetings and we hope that a mid-week meeting will gather those who want to participate in this important process but who have not yet attended due to weekend commitments.
The Staff Parish Relations Committee has embarked on the circle process in lieu of doing formal “annual evaluations” of the church staff this year. Recognizing that the congregation and the staff must work together to fulfill the mission and vision of the UPA, these Circle Meetings are designed to provide a safe place for us to gather to have a frank and open discussion about how we (our congregation and our staff together) can improve on what we already do so well.

We will be recruiting participants at coffee hour again on Sunday. Alternatively you can sign up by e-mailing Beverly Loudin at Beverly_loudin@atriushealth.org

We will also be publishing the insights that we have gathered over the first meetings in next week’s e-mail blast so look for that.

Capital Campaign Update
The UPA Capital Campaign Committee has been working behind the scenes over the last couple of months—that’s why you haven’t heard much—but we’ve been busy refining the results of the Feasibility Study.
You may recall that at the UPA Annual Meeting in February 2018 we voted as a church to proceed with a capital campaign. This means that we will be raising funds for several important and significant projects at UPA. These projects were outlined in the Feasibility Study that was conducted in the fall of 2017 by our consultant, Full Harvest Fundraising.

This effort is being coordinated with our Church Vitality Project which has identified the following three core values of UPA:

  • Acceptance/Radical Welcome/Inclusiveness
  • Rooted in progressive Christian spirituality
  • Service to others

Our church needs to reflect these core values through its physical space.
When the church was originally built in the 1850’s it was designed for a different type of worship experience and uses than today. The addition of the fellowship hall and offices 30 years ago reflected how our space needed to evolve to support our changing church.

Now it is time to update our spaces again. Here are a few of the major projects that could benefit from the Capital Campaign:

  • Sanctuary Revitalization – Phase 2 – This will include significant improvements to the sound, Lighting, Functionality, and layout. The intent is to bring our worship space into the 21st century while retaining its historic past and sacredness.
  • Bathroom renovations/modernizations – To provide an excellent experience for visitors, building users and members.
  • Kitchen renovations/modernizations – To improve the functionality of our upstairs kitchen which is heavily used and to modernize the downstairs kitchen so that it can support existing and expanded potential uses in a compliant way.
  • Fellowship Hall updates – Install air conditioning, new carpet and other amenities to improve the comfort and experience of our summer worship space, memorial receptions, gallery usage and other events held there.

What’s next? In the next few weeks I will be contacting a few of you to ask you to serve in a specific role with the Capital Campaign. When you receive my call, most of you will be asked to work on a specific but important part of the campaign. I look forward to that conversation with you.

Yours in peace, love & faith,
Lyman Jackson for the UPA Capital Campaign Committee

Invitation to join Vision/Vitality Team
from Natascha George
Now that we have better insight into our UPA identity—we seek to offer radical welcome, progressive Christian roots, and service to others—it is time to turn our attention toward how we manifest our identity in the activities of our church life and in our church facilities. We are seeking a leadership team to work with consultant Betsy Waters in this effort.

As Betsy describes it, “The team will consider the ways the congregation lives into the three prongs of its identity, ways it falls short, and work to unearth the stories, patterns and paradoxes that maintain the status quo.  It will build brave space to examine questions that the congregation has not been able to address directly. Using what we discover together, the team will develop a plan to engage more of the congregation, either by area of ministry or as a church as a whole.”

Would you like to be part of this team?  Contact Natascha George natascha.george@gmail.com for more information.

A note from organizer and UPA Deacon Samantha Cowan,
I am quickly approaching my 4 year anniversary as the Allston/Brighton (and now Brookline, too!) Program Director at FriendshipWorks. As a clergyperson in The United Methodist Church, my ministry with FriendshipWorks is my primary appointment on behalf of the church. Seeing my work with elders and volunteers through the lens of ministry has been a gift of strength, courage, and mercy to me (and I hope to others, as well). To Donate or to Join the Team Click Here

UPA Book Club
The book chosen for our June 8th meeting is The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, A Novel by Lisa See, published in 2017, 400 pages. This book has over 1200 reviews on Amazon.com; 87% of the reviewers give it four or five stars.

Helen Simonson wrote this description of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane for The Washington Post: The story begins small, plunging us into the immersive detail of a single grueling day picking tea with the young girl, Li-yan, her mother, A-ma, and the rest of their ethnic minority Akha family…What makes life bearable for the Akha is their belief system, which infuses every aspect of their daily lives. The full sweep of their practices is flawlessly embedded in See’s prose…The hardships that confront Li-yan in her life are as compelling as the fog-shrouded secret groves where she and her mother cultivate a special healing tea. …See has wider ground to cover, including Chinese adoption, the international fine tea market and modern Chinese migration to the United States… A lush tale infused with clear-eyed compassion, this novel will inspire reflection, discussion and an overwhelming desire to drink rare Chinese tea.

The Betty Meyer Art Gallery

“Carry On” by David Michael Lieb
Exhibit Dates: May 2 – June 29, 2018

Story by Doug Wood-Boyle

Collage is an ancient art form that dates back to 900 BC in the Far East, but had a resurgence in France, where it received its name, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Now Salem based artist and architect David Michael Lieb is bringing his latest solo show. “Carry On works in Collage” to the United Parish of Auburndale’s Betty Meyer Gallery, throughout  May and June.

Lieb describes the collection in this statement, “The works presented in ‘Carry On’ are a complex collection of collage works that illuminate everyday experiences of love, betrayal, homesickness and exile, through the lens by which we experience Modern life.  ‘Carrying On’ is a metaphor to navigate the prism of life, in the presence of the greatest gradations between ecstasies and griefs.”

While artists have been layering images and incorporating autonomous elements into their work since the advent of paper, collage truly emerged as a medium in its own right in the early years of the 20th century with the Cubist experiments of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The duo coined the term “collage” (from the French verb “coller,” meaning “to glue” or “to stick”) to describe works composed from pasted pieces of colored paper, newsprint, and fabric, considered at the time to be an audacious intermingling of high and low culture. It revolutionized modern art.(i.e. artSpace.com)
